On May 31, 2023, a workshop on "Innovative Education for Sustainable Development" was held at the Institute of Natural Science and Geography of Abai University in the framework of the "Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals in Geography Teacher Training and Retraining" project. The seminar was held by Professor Khanjan Mehta, Vice Provost for Creative Studies of Lehigh University (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA).
During the seminar, Professor Khanjan Mehta spoke about the current global problems, and ways of solving them, and demonstrated his own projects aimed at improving people`s quality of life and helping people in need. Professor highlighted the need to rethink the concept of education and noted the importance of interdisciplinarity. Special attention was paid to the project "Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals in Geography Teacher Training and Retraining". The professor emphasized the importance of this project for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in Kazakhstan. He also encouraged teachers and researchers to participate in an initiative called "Central Asian Researchers Network", which aims to increase research capacity in Central Asia.
At the end of the workshop, participants discussed sustainability issues in education with the professor, examined examples from different countries, and discussed the possibility of joint cooperation in the future.
