On February 28, 2024, Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University held a key meeting with the UNESCO Cluster Office in Almaty dedicated to promoting initiatives for sustainable development and green education in teacher training.
Discussions during the meeting focused on the development of educational programs, research collaboration, community engagement, and enhancement of potential in the field of green technologies. Both sides emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to education in sustainable development within the education system and concluded on the strategic partnership in this direction.
The university has a significant track record in implementing projects on green technologies with leading scientists from Japan, China, and Malaysia, which will contribute to the creation of new educational programs and additional qualifications in the field of ESG.
Mr. Nurbek Teleshaliyev, Education Specialist for Central Asia at the UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office, noted the intention of Abai University to cooperate in promoting green education and facilitating sustainable development in teacher training, naming the university a flagship in OER education. He also remarked that this meeting serves as a starting point in OER education and green skills.
Recognizing the urgent need for action on climate change and environmental protection, the meeting underscored the importance of collaboration between academic institutions and international organizations.
Overall, the "Green Education" initiated by the university will include directions such as "Green" schools, "Green" skills, and "Green" communities.
