On May 15, 2024, the Asian Forum "The Future of Climate Change Education: Creating synergy between teachers and Stakeholders" began at Abai KazNPU (Abai University), as well as the first meeting of the II stage of the project of teachers of the region on climate change education (ATECCE). The forum will be held for three days.
The opening of the event was attended by Chairman of the Board-Rector of Abai University Bolat Tlep, Director of the Center for the Promotion of ESD at Okayama University (UNESCO Chair for Research and Education for Sustainable Development) Hiroki Fujii, winner of a personal copy of the IPCC 2007 Nobel Peace Prize Rae Kwon Chung, representatives of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, UNESCO Regional Office In Almaty, the Analytical Center of the Almaty City Development Center JSC, experts from Korea, the Philippines, Japan, Indonesia, India and China.
The forum is organized by Abai University in cooperation with Okayama University, UNESCO Regional Office in Almaty with the support of the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). The goal is to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation between educational institutions and stakeholders to address climate change issues. The Forum aims to create a platform for the exchange of knowledge and best practices, the development of joint strategies that promote sustainable development and innovation in education.
Bolat Tlep noted the importance of the forum and stressed that KazNPU named after Abai, which is the flagship of pedagogical education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, applies new innovations towards the creation of a green university, a digital university and a pedagogical research university, uses world experience in the training of teachers of a new formation and the development of science.
During the opening ceremony of the event, Hiroki Fujii and Rae Kwon Chung were awarded the title of "Honorary Professor of Abai KazNPU".
Professor Rae Kwon Chung stressed the importance of environmental research and the need to attract the attention of the younger generation to the Green Economy. He noted that the fight against climate change can be carried out not only through finance, technology and economics, but also through a change in thinking, and universities play a key role here.
The meeting participants discussed topical issues of adapting educational programs to the challenges of climate change, involving stakeholders in this process and forming a sustainable education ecosystem capable of effectively responding to climate change. The event not only facilitated the exchange of best practices and scientific research, but also revealed the potential for future collaborations and projects in the field of environmental education in Asia.
